RYA Intermediate Powerboat Course

  • Course Aim

    To teach powerboating up to the standard required to complete a short coastal passage by day.
  • Duration

    2 days
  • Prior Experience Required

    Candidates should be competent to the standard of National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 with coastal endorsement.
    It is also recommended that candidates hold a First Aid certificate and a VHF operator's certificate.

    Please note that a current Passport size Photograph is required for Certification
  • Minimum Age

    16 years old

    Theory: Planning a day cruise:
    • Navigation
    • True & magnetic bearings
    • Chart symbols
    • Tidal diamonds & tidal streams
    • Use of pilot books
    • Position lines
    • Use of marina locks
    • Lat. & long.
    • GPS principles
    • Weather forecasts
    • Tidal heights at secondary ports & tidal curves
    • Plotting course to steer
    • Collision regulations
    Practical: This puts into practice the theory above, and completes the passage.
    • Boat preparation
    • Boat handling
    • Pilotage
    • Passage making
    • Man overboard
