RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course

Course Aim
To teach the skills required to skipper a motor cruiser of at least 7m LOA safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.

Duration
5 days with night passages.

Prior experience required
As this is a course for potential skippers, those attending should be competent boat handlers with a good knowledge of the theory of navigation and meteorolgy.

- Emergency situations
Those looking to work commercially will need to take the
Coastal Skipper Examination - a 6 to 10 hour exam.
To take the exam, candidates must be aged 17 or over and require:
- VHF certificate
- First Aid certificate
- 800 miles logged within 10 years prior to the exam
- 30 days living on board
- 2 days as skipper
- 12 night hours
The Exam can be taken after completing the practical course, or directly for those who already have the required amount of experience. The exam can either be booked direct on the
