RYA Yachtmaster Preparation

There is no RYA syllabus for the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate, however Principal Power are able to offer practical advice and preparation for the examination. We are able to either give candidates experience of making longer passages, simply refresh your skills on boat handling, navigation or seamanship, or just simply let you know what to expect during the exam.

In order to sit the Yachtmaster Offshore exam, you are expected to be a competent skipper on a motor cruiser on any passage during which the boat is no more than 150 miles from harbour.

The Exam itself takes between 8 to 12 hours. Pre-exam requirements:

  • 50 days and 2500 miles at sea, including at least 5 passages over 60 miles
  • Skipper for at least 2 of the 60 mile passages
  • 2 of the 60 miles passages must have involved overnight passages
  • 5 days experience as skipper
  • Half the qualifying seatime must have been conducted in tidal waters
